In defiance of the local hospitality stereotype, Node Kyoto is as modern as they come — industrial-chic architecture rather than ryokan style, and an impressive collection (and exhibitions) of local and international contemporary art in place of traditional Japanese crafts.

With just 25 rooms it’s properly boutique-sized, and with its substantial comforts it’s a luxurious one, not just a stylish one.

The hotel’s restaurant serves farm-to-table fare that’s made from local ingredients but casts its inspiration quite a bit farther afield than the kaiseki cuisine you’d expect from one of Kyoto’s classic ryokans.
